Plastics : Chrome-Plated ABS, definition and applications


What is chrome-plated ABS:
  • Chrome-plated ABS is a composite material consisting of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic that has been coated with a thin layer of chromium through an electroplating process. 
  • This combination provides the lightweight, moldable qualities of plastic with the metallic appearance and increased durability of chrome.
Chromium is a hard, shiny metal known for its corrosion resistance and ability to take a high polish. It's commonly used in stainless steel, chrome plating, and as pigments for paints and plastics.

Production process:
  • Base formation: first, the ABS plastic part is molded into the desired shape
  • Surface preparation: the plastic undergoes etching and treatment to create microscopic pores for adhesion
  • Conductive layer: a thin copper or nickel layer is applied to make the non-conductive plastic suitable for electroplating
  • Chrome plating: chromium is deposited onto the surface through electroplating, creating the distinctive metallic finish
